Sparks a light

This is probably, the coolest article I've written here so far.  This is about what might be considered the most traditional ice cream shop in Valencia.  How do I know of this shop? Well, according to my mom, when she was younger and allowed to eat whatever she wanted, my grandma used to absolutely love the ice creams here. Just about a week ago, I was passing close by, I entered and I ordered a chocolate ice cream. I was eating the cone of gelato, and I was certain that it's exactly the kind of flavor my grandma would have absolutely loved. Basic (classic) but very well captured. Fulfilling and sweet but not overly so. I can honestly say it was the most emotionally fulfilling ice cream I've had, this year for sure, and in a long while.  They are famous for their "cortes gigantes"  which I can only describe us two slices of wafer with a lot of ice cream inside.  So, the same girl that served me my delicious chocolate ice cream the other day, was in the shop toda...

It was hot today here in Valencia. The hottest day of the summer so far. Do you know what makes heat better? Ice cream. Do you know what helps your soul feel better after maybe being cranky from the heat? Nice, kind people. If you are in Valencia's center of town, my favorite ice cream shop can offer you both. It's located at the corner between the street of the sea ("Calle del Mar") and the street of hazelnuts ("Calle Avellanas"). Which is honestly, a wonderful symbolism for the connection between flavor and refreshment that you can obtain from their ice creams. It also places it right by the center of cultural, touristic and traditional attractions in town. I tend to go for their lemon ice cream, but I honestly come back because the two women in charge of the shop are always so kind and they seem happy to see kids coming in for their treat, or adult families, like me and my mom (we've been by a good few times and they always seem so happy to see us). ...

Thinking about people who spark a light, I remembered this story from years ago. I met this man for 5 minutes, I'd say maybe I crossed paths with him once shortly after that. But now if I tried to remember his face I couldn't, I wouldn't recognize him if I met him again. But I remember the story, I remember how he made me feel. And I remember his kindness, I remember the light in his eyes. The way he made the world a little better that day with his conversation with me. For a moment, for a minute. He made my life better, a tiny bit better, forever, by the way he handled that conversation with me, about 5 years ago. I was in a work environment, at the time, where casual conversations felt very sexualized. I didn't feel attacked or scared. But I feel very out of place. These experiences, linked to other events in my past, made me fully understand and embrace the fact that I am demisexual. Summer came around, and I was out of that work environment, but the feel...

Nature is calming. Being surrounded by nature is one of the few things that, not being related to any other human being, can actually calm my soul. If there's nothing else, there's always the sound of the birds. Their tweets, unrelated to your previous mood, can be a release of expectations to perform. They always tweet in certain ways at certain times of day or certain weathers.  There are always new things to excite your mind, like the cries of frogs, their jumps. Trees constantly changing from season to season. New and the same every year at once. If there's no other human around, you can be yourself and no one can tell. No one can judge or feel scared, uneasy. The sound of the water flowing doesn't care how you walk, nor feels the need for a performative smile. No need to make yourself small to leave space for others. Bees will come and make you scared (well, they make me scared,) however you sit, however you choose to...
